Dr. Uretz Oliphant (center) was awarded the Physician Champion Award for Education for his work chairing the Playing It Safe event; Dr. John Moore (left) and Dr. Don Davison (right) were awarded the Physician Champion Award for Community Service for their work at the American Lung Association’s Asthma Adventure Camp.

At the Fall Membership Meeting in September, CCMS presented awards to three of its members to recognize their volunteer work.

The Community Service Award was presented to Dr. John Moore and Dr. Don Davison for
their work at the Asthma Adventure Camp. Dr. Moore and Dr. Davison have volunteered their time and skills for 25 and 23 years respectively at the camp near Fox Lake, Illinois, sponsored by the American Lung Association. Dr. Moore served as the camp’s Medical Director for many years until 2006, and continued to serve as a staff physician when Dr. Davison took over as Medical Director. Dr. Davison has also served for many years as a staff physician. Both doctors help monitor the campers—ages 7-14 and diagnosed with asthma—during their week of camp. They review applications to prepare for any potential health problems, gather medications for the small camp pharmacy, monitor the campers’ charts for medication changes, and address issues not only with asthma, but with the overall well-being of the campers. Both doctors make themselves available 24/7 to help kids who are having issues with their health. The camp staff finds both doctors very down to earth; neither one hesitates to have fun with campers during their activities. They are very much advocates for the well being of the asthmatics who attend.

The Educational Award was presented to Dr. Uretz Oliphant for his leadership in developing
and promoting the annual Playing It Safe Family Safety Fair at the Champaign County
Fairgrounds. He and his dedicated Carle staff, as well as community organizations and
volunteers, make up the planning committee that organizes the event which includes nearly every local public service agency with a concern for children’s safety. The aim of the fair is to prevent accidental injury—the number one killer of children in America—by creating a fun atmosphere for children and families to learn good safety habits through interactive learning stations such as the Bicycle Rodeo, Hunt for Home Health Hazards, tours of the AirLife medical helicopter and other emergency vehicles, and more than 40 other activities.
